Level Measurement for Complex Media in Harsh Conditions

 

Acid and alkaline storage tanks, solvent tanks, bitumen, slurry, and coal powder silos present challenging level measurement conditions. These applications need instruments that withstand high temperature, high pressure, and foam or steam interference. The media may be viscous or powdery. Anhui Tiankang's capacitive level meter (UYB series) works by using the probe electrode and the container wall (or a reference electrode) to form a coaxial capacitor. Changes in liquid level change the dielectric constant between the two poles, which in turn changes the capacitance value. The electronic circuit converts these capacitance changes into a standard electrical signal for continuous level measurement.

The capacitive level meter is unaffected by foam, steam, or fog. It performs far better than ultrasonic level meters in complex chemical tank applications. The key selection parameter is the dielectric constant (ε) of the media. The meter works with liquids, slurries, and powders that have stable dielectric constants clearly higher than air (ε=1). Most chemical liquids (water, acid and alkaline solutions, solvents) and powders meet this condition. For media with very low dielectric constants (such as pure dry gases or anhydrous pure oil products), the capacitance change is too small. A guided wave radar level meter is a better choice.

Capacitive level meter products include a radio frequency admittance type as an upgrade option. This type is ideal for viscous, sticky media that tend to build up on the probe. The special circuit design overcomes measurement errors caused by the coating layer. It is an excellent choice for sticky bitumen, glue, and similar materials.

Probe Materials and Structure Options

 

Probe materials and structures offer multiple configurations. 316L stainless steel probe suits water, oil, and neutral chemical liquids. PP/PTFE tetrafluoroethylene coated probes withstand strong acids, strong alkalis, and highly corrosive chemicals. This is the main corrosion-proof configuration for chemical applications. For high chloride ion or strong oxidizing media, Hastelloy or titanium probes are recommended.

The rigid rod type suits short-range tanks from 0.3 to 6 meters. The cable type (steel cable probe) suits large silos and deep tanks from 6 to 30 meters. The flexible steel cable is easy to transport and install. All structures are available with flameproof type (UYBX, ExdⅡCT6) for chemical, oil, and gas hazardous areas.

Standards and Export Certification

 

All products strictly follow JB/T 10338 standards. Accuracy is 0.5% FS to 1% FS. Media temperature ranges from -40 to 200°C (high-temperature type up to 250°C). Pressure rating is PN16/PN25 (high pressure available on request). Output includes 4-20mA and RS485 Modbus. Relay high and low level alarms are supported. Standard process connection is M20×1.5 thread or Chinese standard flanges. Export shipments include NPT threads and ANSI flanges. Each product includes a factory calibration certificate. Export shipments include CE and ATEX/IECEx explosion-proof certification.
